Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo
For many years I never saw the “point” of having a reverb pedal. I had awesome Fender amp spring reverb on tap at all times, why would I need anything else? This pedal demonstrates exactly why you would need anything else.
The EQD Ghost Reverb is an incredible pedal. To me, it sounds like a modulated spring reverb. There’s a really small amount of chorusing or vibrato on the trails. It’s over overwhelming or in front of your signal or anything - it just fills in all the weird silences in your tone that you maybe didn’t otherwise notice until this was in front of your amp (I know I didn’t).
So 3 knobs: Depth, duh, Dwell is the overall tone and shape of the reverb trail. at 0% it’s very bright and sparkly but as you dial up that knob you get more mids and lows mixed in. I really like having that feature. Anything else would sound to crisp for a pedal that is in the “ambient” game. Lastly, Attack is basically a pre-delay. It listens to your signal and applies the reverb after a certain amount of time. I imagine this is handy if you have a drive pedal on and don’t want the ‘verb jumping all over your lead lines.
The Ghost Echo is definitely a pedal that influences your playing style. The way it interacts with your playing is really top notch. It’s definitely there and adding some really awesome stuff, but it’s not getting in the way at all. I’m really seriously reconsidering my thoughts on reverb pedals after this guy. Super impressed.
For my ears, I really like having this pedal cranked up pretty high. Depth past noon, maybe more like 2 or 3 o'clock even, depending on what I’m playing. Dwell at about 50%, and the attack I find variable. I like it at 0%, I like it at 100%. I find myself with it below 50% most of the time, but it’s definitely been the setting I change most.
My one issue with this pedal is that when you have it at higher reverb settings, it tends to be noisy. Lots of hiss when you crank up the depth knob. I hear it’s an inherent quality of the type of reverb this is, but it’s a little bit of a drag. Not enough to prevent me from buying this pedal… but something to consider if you’re in the market.
All in all, great pedal. If you’re in the market for a reverb pedal this one should be on your list to check out.
